A scoping review into the teaching and learning of Arabic as an additional language

This study comprehensively reviews existing research on teaching and learning Arabic as a Second Language (AL2)

A recent scoping review conducted by the Department of Education at the University of Oxford, provides a clear picture of the extent and nature of existing research into learning and teaching Arabic as an additional language (AL2). AL2 is used to refer to the learning and teaching of Arabic as anything other than a first language (i.e., a language learned in infancy through naturalistic exposure), and it includes both foreign language and second language, as well as heritage language learning. This review provides a “map of the landscape” of research published in English, pointing teachers and researchers to publications that may be relevant to them and identifying gaps in the existing literature that highlight the need for further research.

Ongoing debates within the Arabic teaching and research community focus on identifying the most effective instructional methods to be used in the Arabic classroom. Yet what is available in the research – especially when it comes to school settings – isn't really known. This scoping review hopes to begin to address such debates and gaps by providing a comprehensive overview of the existing body of research on AL2 teaching and learning.
